If you want to practice good bed bug control then it starts with good prevention. If you can prevent bed bugs from coming into your home and if you closely inspect any luggage with heavy scrutiny, it will keep them out of your home. This is especially important if you are returning from a long trip overseas or from a third world country or even a highly populated city.

You should not pick up any discarded furniture; any old or discarded furniture on the sides of the road will be needed. If you are moving into an apartment you should treat every gap and hole you can find in your home with drione dust or diatomaceous earth. This’ll keep the insects from coming in through the treated areas. Remember the holes under your sink and in your bathroom.

Early treatment of your bed and its frame using diatomaceous earth will also help. When you are returning from another country take your luggage to your bathroom and wash your hair thoroughly.  Keep your luggage in the bathroom until you have machine washed and machine dried any clothing in your luggage. Keeping the luggage in your bathroom will keep any bed bugs isolated in the bathroom until you have inspected and/or treated the luggage.

It is essential to machine dry any clothing or fabrics. The temperature in the drier will be high enough to kill any bed bugs.  If you find bed bugs in your luggage it will be easier to find and kill them in a bathroom than in your bed room.  If you already have bed bugs in your home then you will need to do every possible treatment you can find short of fumigation for bed bug control. Bed bugs are very resilient and you will have to be deal with them rigorously.

In just the last five years bed bugs have been making a major resurgence everywhere, including some parts of the United States and all over the world.  In my opinion bed bugs are very hard to get rid of and you should not underestimate these tenacious and bothersome bugs.

Don’t assume that only you will carry bed bugs. Your pets will carry them too. So if you have dogs or cats then you’ll have to check their beds as well. You can use diatomaceous earth to rub into their fur or dust their beds so that you can kill the bed bugs.

Inspect and always machine wash and machine dry any clothing or fabrics in your home. You might also want to get a new pillow if you find bed bugs in your home. Bed bugs are able to chew their way through almost any fabric and some mattresses.  Getting rid of any messes on your floor and clutter is required for controlling them.
