How to Frame an Oil Painting
Are you looking to professionally frame your oil painting canvas on a tight budget? Consider framing your artwork yourself and save the high cost of having it framed by a professional framer.
Choosing Your Frame
Select a frame that sets off the colors and style of your oil painting, or one that ideally fits in with the décor of your home. A hobby or craft store is the best place to find a great frame to fit your budget; the frame that you select should match the dimensions of the oil painting you want to frame. Decide whether you are looking to add a matt to the frame; if you are then be sure to select one that perfectly matches both your frame and your oil painting.
The Framing Process
Once you have selected your ideal frame, the process to set the oil painting canvas in place is a simple one!
- – Place the frame glass-side down on your dining room table, or clean kitchen counter and carefully remove the board backing.
- – Carefully place the oil painting canvas into the frame taking care not to catch the painting canvas on any jagged edges on the frame.
- – Replace the board backing into the frame opening and carefully push the placeholder clips back into position.
Clean the glass of any smudges or fingerprints before you hang it up in a position of pride on you wall!
If you have the tools and the skills, consider creating a custom frame for your oil painting; not only is this a more cost effective method of framing your oil painting, but it also ensures that your frame is exactly what you are looking for to frame your work of art. Your custom made frame can be stained, painted, or decorated to your personal tastes.
Some oil paintings would better served by mounting the canvas on a wooden stretching frame; an affordable mounting frame can be purchased affordably at a hobby store, or you can put your DIY skills to good use and create one to fit your oil painting perfectly.
