It has been stated that 10% of the American population has toenail fungus. It can be spread the same way athletes foot fungus is spread; though damp locker room or swimming pool showers and surfaces. A fungus thrives in dark and damp areas which is why there are more people with toenail fungus than fingernail fungus.

Prevention is the best cure, so keeping feet clean and dry and wearing cotton socks is a good start. Wearing shower shoes or other footwear at the pool or public shower rooms will help too. If the fungus does appear, catching it early may offer a better chance at successful treatment.

Many people have claimed that vinegar or Listerine foot baths have cleared up their toenail fungus. Use enough vinegar or Listerine to completely cover the nail and soak them every night. Change the solution every 3 or 4 days. Completely dry the feet and put on cotton socks. For some, this works like a charm and for others, it does not. There is only one way to know. Vics Vapo Rub is another home remedy that has gotten a good share of nods.

Many prescription fungus medications are extremely expensive and they also carry some serious side effects which include possible dangers to the heart and liver. There are also over the counter remedies which some claim work wonderfully. Asking the pharmacist his (or her) opinion wouldn’t hurt either.

If the toenail fungus is severe, it might need to be removed all together. This is a fairly common procedure and although it is a little painful, it isn’t as bad as one might imagine. Consulting with the doctor is the only way to find out if that is a plausible answer.

Finding a cure for toenail fungus is not an easy answer because not everyone reacts the same way to different treatments. There are also times where there may be more than just the fungus in the nail, in which case, a doctor should look at it anyway. There may be some sort of secondary infection going on which is making it more difficult to remove the fungus.

The good news is; some people get lucky and pick up the first over the counter remedy they find, and it works like a charm. Yet others search and try a multitude of remedies without any luck. Consult with the doctor or pharmacist and start experimenting.
