Rats, mice, squirrels, gerbils, porcupines, beavers, chipmunks, guinea pigs, and voles are rodentia, most commonly referred to as rodents.  These mammals make up about 40% of all mammals.  They are found on all continents of our world, except Antarctica.

These pests sneak into your home and gardens and often cause a whole mess of destruction.  Known for their gnawing, they eat not only food, but also structures.  Some have even shown traces of diseases like rabies.  They are able to get in through the smallest cracks or gaps, so a vital part of rodent control is to make sure you take care of these.  Use weather stripping and covers on vents leading in and out of the home.  Caulk your windows and baseboards too.  Not only will these measures keep out unwanted pests, but also they will keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

If you do find yourself with an infestation, you may choose to take action with certain pest control products.  One specially formulated product is the rodent repellent.  This uses pepper to irritate the critter and keeps it at bay.  These are often popular due to their versatility.  Many can be used both indoors and outdoors.

When you do chose to use a chemical substance, it is important that you take caution and read all labels.  Use them only as directed and remember that using more than the recommended dosage could reduce the effectiveness of the product.

Perhaps you don’t want to kill or harm the animals.  Traps are a popular tool because they are often less offensive.  There are three types of rodent traps: glue traps, live traps and snap traps.  Glue traps work similarly to flypaper; with a strong adhesive they capture the pest.  Live traps are often preferred with the larger pests.  They usually use a lure to capture the rodent.  Snap traps are small wooden planks with a spring-loaded trigger and are often what we think of when we here the term rat trap or mouse trap.

Another popular rodent control option is a bait system.  These are similar to the ones used against insects.  They include a poisonous lure that, once consumed, turn the forger into a carrier.  The creature returns to its colony and unknowingly shares the poison with the whole clan.

Consider this… the first step of any rodent control plan should focus on preventing them from invading your home.  To keep from attracting various rodents, make certain that your home and yard stay tidy.  Don’t leave food lying around.  This includes your pet’s food as well as disposed food (ie garbage).
