For as long as their have been medical conditions, there have been over the counter treatments. For colds, there are OTC cold medications. For Athletes Foot, there are many over the counter treatments. The effectiveness of any over the counter treatment will vary from person to person.

There are ingredients in other medications which seem to ease bladder control problems. These medications are antihistamines and weight control products. It is not recommended that anyone use these for bladder control long term because they have side effects.

Bladder control issues, or incontinence, are quite common. Sometimes it is temporary and sometimes it is not. Because it can be an embarrassing condition, some people do not want to speak to their doctors about it. However, sometimes all it takes is a simple trip to the doctor to correct the problem. Bladder infections often cause bouts of incontinence. Get rid of the infection the incontinence also disappears. In any event, the doctor will be able to determine the reason for the bladder control issues and may be able to prescribe medications that do work.

There is one over the counter bladder control patch that covers the urethra but it must be removed before urinating. This isn’t technically a medication, however. Other over the counter medications may be available and anyone is welcome to try them, however, none seem to have lasting success. Perhaps a time will come when more potent over the counter bladder control medications will be available but for now, only the doctor can provide the most relief. Trying the over the counter methods (especially short term) certainly won’t hurt but it may be a waste of time and money if a solution to the problem can be found at the doctor’s office.

At one time, antihistamines and other medications were available only by prescription. In time, perhaps effective bladder control products will be available over the counter. This is another good question to ask the doctor. For many of us, running to the drug store to pick up an over the counter medication s so much simpler than taking time out for a doctor visit and waiting in line at the pharmacy. For right now, as far as bladder control products, that is how it has to be.
