Do Non-Prescription Sleep Aids Work?
Many people have suffered from insomnia from time to time. For some, it becomes so severe that they begin looking for remedies to the problem. When it comes to sleep aids, there are basically two types; prescription and non prescription. A lot of people want to start with a non prescription sleep aid before seeing their doctor about the problem.
Non prescription medication falls into two categories; herbal and over the counter. Herbal remedies are those such as Chamomile tea, Melatonin or Valerian Root. For some people, any one of those is enough to solve their sleeping dilemma. For others, turning to the over the counter remedies comes next. Most of these are antihistamines and are actually intended for those with colds, flu or hives. They also have agents in them which cause drowsiness and help many people fall asleep. For short term use, the over the counter medications can do a very good job although they can lead to daytime drowsiness and loss of cognitive function. They should not be used long term, however, since side effects can occur.
Whenever insomnia continues to be a problem, it is best to consult a doctor. There is nothing wrong with trying a more natural remedy but if it doesn’t work, the problem must still be solved. The doctor may even have some other herbal remedies not listed here.
Non prescription sleep aids do work, for some. There are many people who now get a good night’s sleep thanks to a non prescription sleep aid. That does not, however, guarantee that it will work for everyone. Experimentation is the best way to find out if an herb or OTC remedy will work. If there is no success within 3-4 days, it may be time to consult a doctor.
If there are any health problems present, consult a doctor before trying a non-prescription sleeping aid. Sleeping disorders may even sometimes be a symptom of a bigger health problem such as sleep apnea. Once the all-clear is given from the doctor, start trying different non-prescription sleep aids and see which work best. Give each trial 3 or 4 days and chart the progress. Then move on to the next. Try herbal remedies before over the counter drugs since the herbs have little to no side effects. If none of those work, start with a low dose OTC medication and see if that helps the sleeping problem.
